PSA PAN status: tracking and e-PAN download
Help a returning customer check a PAN application, read the provider's status and request an e-PAN through the correct UTIITSL or Protean service.
Someone you filed a PAN application for comes back a few days later. “Has it come through?” they ask. Or they’ve lost the card and want a copy on their phone. Or they’ve brought a receipt and an email and can’t tell which one matters.
Before you open any website, it helps to know who does what. The Income Tax Department allots the PAN. UTIITSL and Protean receive and process the application. So the status lives with whichever of those two filed it. The FAQs on UTIITSL’s site, checked on 18 October 2026, direct applicants to the designated provider portal. And if your trouble is signing in to your own account rather than a customer’s application, that’s a different problem: use the UTI PSA login guide.
What do you need before opening a tracker?
Ask the customer to bring the acknowledgement for the work they want checked. Then find out what they actually want: an update on the application, an electronic copy, or help finding a card that was posted.
Read the acknowledgement for four things: the applicant’s name, the provider, the application date and the service requested. This matters more than it seems. A correction request is a separate record from an earlier new-PAN application, so one customer can hold two different references.
What if the acknowledgement is lost? Help the customer find the original record first. If that doesn’t work, ask the provider that filed the application about the missing reference. And two things you should never do: type your own agent ID into a tracking field, or build a reference number out of a payment number. Neither will work, and both muddy the record.
How do you track a UTIITSL application?
Start at the UTIITSL PAN portal. As of 18 October 2026, its PAN Services area has a Track PAN Card option with a Click to Track Status link.
The public UTIITSL tracker, checked on 18 October 2026, asks for three things. The first is the Application/Coupon Number or the 10-character PAN. The second is the applicable birth, incorporation, agreement, partnership or trust-deed, or formation date, in dd/mm/yyyy format. The third is a CAPTCHA. Check what you type against the customer’s record, select Search, and read the notice that comes back.
Write down the notice word for word, along with the date you checked. Don’t swap it for your own label like “approved” or “rejected”. The customer will rely on what you tell them, and your label might be wrong.
If the tracker won’t open, the outcome is still open. A page that fails to load isn’t a rejected application. Call UTIITSL customer care (the numbers are near the end of this post) and ask.
How do you track a Protean application?
Use this route only when the acknowledgement shows Protean as the provider. Open the tracking link in Protean’s PAN status guide. Checked on 18 October 2026, it leads to the public PAN/TAN application tracker, which asks for the application type and a 15-digit numeric acknowledgement number.
- Open the tracker from Protean’s official guide, and check that you’re on the provider’s own website.
- Select PAN - New / Change Request. The page also lists TAN requests, so double-check the selection.
- Enter the acknowledgement. The field shows an N- prefix and asks for 15 numeric digits.
- Complete the verification shown, submit, and read the notice and any instructions attached to it.
If the page says the acknowledgement is invalid, Protean’s guide says to check all 15 digits, the correct application and the correct service. A request submitted very recently may also need the minimum waiting period to pass before it shows up. Whatever you do, don’t try guessed numbers. A result is only useful if it belongs to the application you’re discussing.
What do Protean’s status results mean?
These are Protean’s own explanations for its own service. For a UTIITSL request, go by the actual UTIITSL notice.
| Protean result | Meaning given in Protean’s guide | Your next check at the counter |
|---|---|---|
| Under process or under scrutiny | The application has been received and is being reviewed | Read any accompanying instruction before deciding whether to wait or ask for clarification |
| PAN allotted | A PAN number has been assigned to the application | Check the e-PAN or physical-card stage; do not promise delivery from allotment alone |
| Dispatched | The physical card has been sent to the communication address | Use delivery or tracking information supplied with the application |
| Delivered | The physical card has reached the address associated with the request | Ask the customer to check the received card’s details |
| Rejected | The application or request could not be processed successfully | Read the stated reason and ask the provider for the next action |
Notice that “PAN allotted” and “delivered” are different stages. A customer may already know their PAN number and still be waiting for the card. Explain the stage shown, then answer their real question.
What about a rejection? Read the stated reason first. The UTIITSL FAQs, checked on 18 October 2026, say an application rejected for incomplete or deficient information is treated as invalid, and a fresh application with correct details and the mandatory supporting documents is needed. For any other reason, ask the provider what comes next.
How do you request an e-PAN through UTIITSL?
UTIITSL’s e-PAN request page, checked on 18 October 2026, limits this facility to applicants whose PAN application or change/correction was issued through UTIITSL. Its terms say the e-PAN goes to the email held in PAN records with the Income Tax Department (ITD), and they specify email-only one-time password (OTP) authentication.
Before you start, ask the customer: can you open the email linked to your PAN record? If the answer is no, stop there (more on that below). If yes:
- Open the page and read its eligibility and delivery terms with the customer.
- Enter the PAN and the relevant month and year in MM/YYYY format. The date label covers birth, incorporation and other entity dates. GSTIN has no mandatory mark.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit. Follow the provider’s response rather than assuming it worked.
- Let the customer complete the authentication themselves on the official route. It’s their email and their code.
If the customer can’t open the email in their PAN record, pause. Don’t enter the shop’s email address in its place, and don’t promise some mobile-OTP alternative. The terms direct the applicant to update the email through a change/correction request first. That’s an email-record problem, and it needs the provider’s correction route.
How do you request an e-PAN through Protean?
Use Protean’s Get e-PAN Card page for its eligible requests. As checked on 18 October 2026, it offers PAN and Acknowledgement Number modes, month/year details and an optional GSTN field. The PAN mode includes an Aadhaar-number field marked for individuals.
Let the customer pick the mode that matches the details they hold. They should type their own Aadhaar number and complete any Aadhaar authentication themselves. Read the consent text with them before going ahead.
Submitting the form doesn’t mean an e-PAN has reached the customer’s email. Check it with them before they leave. And if their record points to the Income Tax Department’s Instant e-PAN service instead, use that service’s guidance. Work out the original route before you ask a second provider for a copy.
What do the e-PAN windows and charges look like?
Check the provider’s terms before you ask for another electronic copy. The conditions below belong to the named public retrieval services, as checked on 18 October 2026. They aren’t your PSA account fee, and they aren’t a wallet deduction.
| Provider | Who can use it | Window | Charge after the window |
|---|---|---|---|
| UTIITSL | Applications or change/correction requests issued through UTIITSL | e-PAN issued within the last one month | ₹8.26 inclusive of taxes for each request |
| Protean | Holders whose latest application was processed through Protean | Allotment or changes confirmed by ITD within the last 30 days, three times | ₹8.26 inclusive of taxes |
A few things trip people up here. Protean’s page counts email deliveries, not file downloads, so don’t tell a customer they have a set number of downloads. UTIITSL’s one-month window isn’t the same as Protean’s 30-day window. And if the date or the request history is unclear, ask the provider to confirm the charge before the customer pays anything.
What if the customer has two requests?
Say a customer brings an old new-PAN acknowledgement and a newer correction receipt. Ask which result they want checked today, before you enter either reference. Keep the two dates in front of you.
Don’t call the correction “complete” just because the earlier record shows the card was delivered. Those are two separate requests. The same goes for e-PAN windows: an old card-delivery date doesn’t tell you where the newer correction stands.
If you can’t tell the references apart, ask the receiving provider which one belongs to the request in question. Don’t open several tracking windows and try each number until one gives a nicer answer.
What about a card that was dispatched but hasn’t arrived?
Once the notice talks about dispatch, ask the provider what delivery information it gives for that case. Keep the dispatch reference, the application reference and the address question separate in your head and on paper. You can’t fix an address by editing a tracking enquiry. If the customer says they’ve moved since applying, ask the provider for the right correction route before making any new request.
When support replies, read the next step back to the customer in plain words: something to send, a later check, or a separate request to consider. Agree who will follow up.
Who do you contact when the case stays unresolved?
Before you call, write a short case note. Put in the filing provider, the request type, the application reference and date, the exact notice with the date you checked it, and what kind of problem it is: tracking, email access, an e-PAN request or physical delivery. If money is involved, keep the payment reference apart from the acknowledgement.
Then ask a specific question. Does the applicant need to supply anything? Which service should handle the next step? A clear question gets a clearer answer than “what’s happening with this?”
UTIITSL’s homepage, checked on 18 October 2026, lists its customer care centre as +91 33 40802999, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, all days. Protean’s Get e-PAN Card page, checked on 18 October 2026, lists 020-27218080, 7 am to 11 pm. Recheck the number on the page before you call. For your SiOnline account, or a request handled through it, use SiOnline support or the Help Centre. Give your agent ID, and never send a password or OTP.
Give the customer no allotment or delivery date unless the provider has told you something you can show them. And before they go, close any email session you used at the counter, so the next person doesn’t see it.
Questions agents ask
Can I track a PAN application with just the customer’s name?
The trackers described above ask for an acknowledgement or application number (UTIITSL also takes the 10-character PAN, with a date). A name isn’t one of the inputs they list. So ask the customer to find the acknowledgement first.
Is the ₹8.26 fee something SiOnline charges?
No. It’s the charge named by the UTIITSL and Protean e-PAN retrieval services for requests outside their windows, as checked on 18 October 2026. It isn’t your PSA account fee. Provider terms change, so check the page before you quote it.
How is this different from the PSA login?
Your PSA login is for your own agent account. Tracking is about a customer’s application with the provider that filed it. If you can’t sign in, see the UTI PSA login guide. For the filing side, see the post on filing a PAN application from the PSA login.
