Release your PAN from an old IRCTC ID first

A PAN, mobile number or email on an old personal IRCTC account can block agent registration. How to release the PAN, the eWallet effect and the limits.

By the SiOnline Team · Published 17 October 2026 · Updated 26 October 2026 · 10 min read

Maybe you made an IRCTC login years ago to book a ticket for a family trip. Now you want an agent ID, and your PAN, mobile number or email is already tied to that old account. That’s one of the most common reasons an agent registration gets stuck. As of 17 October 2026, SiOnline’s current registration documents page says the application will not complete until a PAN already on a personal account is dealt with.

A quick warning before we start. IRCTC’s own screens could not be reached for a check that day, so treat the steps below as a pointer and not a confirmed instruction. If what you see on your screen is different from the guide, follow your screen.

Why does an old personal account block an agent registration?

IRCTC’s Revised Agent Policy, effective from 29 November 2019, makes verification of the retail agent’s Aadhaar number mandatory, and a PAN number is mandatory too. The agent must also give a correct address, a unique mobile number and a unique email. The policy is on IRCTC’s site.

Now the part that causes the trouble. On SiOnline’s current registration documents page, a PAN can sit on one IRCTC account only, and so can a mobile number or email. The page names a PAN already on a personal account as the single biggest cause of rejection, and a mobile number or email already in use as the other common one. Note that this is SiOnline’s description of its own process. It is not an IRCTC rule.

IRCTC’s user registration terms add one more thing to know. If a user registers more than one user ID or books tickets on several, IRCTC reserves the right to deactivate all such registrations. So please don’t open a second personal ID just to move your details across. Release them from the first one.

What should you check before you start?

Four items matter for an agent registration. Here’s where each rule comes from, so you can see what’s IRCTC’s and what’s SiOnline’s.

ItemThe ruleWhere it comes from
PANMandatory; one IRCTC account onlyMandatory: IRCTC Agent Policy. One account only: SiOnline’s registration documents page

EmailUnique; one IRCTC account onlyUnique: IRCTC Agent Policy. One account only: SiOnline’s registration documents page

Log in to your personal account and note down the mobile number and email shown on your profile. You’ll need them in a minute.

One more thing. If you’ll register with a different PAN from the one on the old account, the clash may not apply at all. Tell SiOnline which PAN you plan to use when you contact them, so the check starts from the right place.

What does releasing a PAN do?

Releasing the PAN from the old ID is covered by a declaration IRCTC publishes for agent registration. The declaration PDF, file dated 25 September 2019, begins: “To register as IRCTC Agent, I request to remove records of my PAN/Aadhaar details associated with IRCTC User Id.” The user agrees to two points:

  1. Release the PAN or Aadhaar registered against this user ID.
  2. Deactivate the associated IRCTC eWallet account, if registered. The eWallet balance will not be refunded, and the user undertakes never to claim an outstanding balance.

That second point is the one people miss. If you have money in an IRCTC eWallet, it won’t come back. So treat the release as a deliberate step, and check and use your eWallet balance first.

SiOnline’s downloadable guide, “How to release or suspend a PAN on IRCTC” (on the downloads page), shows a screen whose visible text matches the declaration. It adds further undertakings, including that the user will never request activation of the IRCTC user ID in future, and one about an IRCTC Loyalty ID. The IRCTC PDF doesn’t list those. The guide is an older image, so read the declaration on your own screen in full before you agree to it.

Where is the option, and what are the steps?

As of 17 October 2026, SiOnline’s guide is an image-only PDF with a file date of 23 August 2018. Its screenshot labels the menu item “Release PAN/AADHAAR (Suspend User)”, with a login password field and a terms checkbox above the Release button. These are the steps it shows:

  1. Log in to IRCTC with the personal ID that holds the PAN.
  2. Open My Account, then My Profile.
  3. Choose the release option for PAN and Aadhaar.
  4. Read the declaration, tick the terms box and enter the login password if the screen asks for it.
  5. Click the release button.

The guide shows no confirmation screen. So write down the date and time, and take a screenshot of whatever you see after you click.

Why does the menu say “Suspend User”?

Good question, and it’s worth stopping on. The menu item says “Suspend User”, and the screen carries an undertaking never to ask for that ID to be activated again. On that evidence, you should expect the personal ID to be suspended after the release. IRCTC hasn’t published what happens to it.

So here’s the practical rule. If you still need that personal ID to book your own tickets, don’t release a PAN from it. Sort out your plan first: either you’re done with the old ID, or you need a different route.

What if your mobile number or email is already in use?

That’s a different problem from the PAN, and it has a simpler fix. On SiOnline’s current registration documents page, you either change the number or email on the old personal account, or you use a different number and email for the agent registration. Do this before you apply, because that page says a clash can take days to unpick once an application is already in progress.

If the old account is yours and still active, two SiOnline pages can help: the guide to changing the mobile number on a personal IRCTC login and the post on changing the registered mobile number and email.

A sensible order of work

Here’s one way to line it up, so nothing gets missed:

  1. Log in to the old personal account and check whether it holds an eWallet balance. Use the balance if you can.
  2. Decide whether you need that personal ID in future. If you do, stop here and talk to SiOnline about your options.
  3. Note the mobile number and email on the profile. Decide whether to change them or use new ones for the agent ID.
  4. Release the PAN, following your own screen.
  5. Record the date, time and a screenshot.
  6. Only then start the agent registration.

What should you tell SiOnline when you get in touch?

A short, clear message gets you a faster, better answer. Include:

  • The PAN you plan to register with, and whether it is already on an old personal IRCTC account.
  • Whether that old account is still yours, and whether you can log in to it.
  • Whether the mobile number or email you want to use is on that old account.
  • If something went wrong, the exact message you saw and the step where it happened.

Leave out your password and any OTP, every time. Nobody at SiOnline needs them to answer these questions.

Three mistakes to avoid

  • Releasing first and checking later. Once the eWallet is deactivated, the balance is gone, so check it before you click.
  • Opening a second personal ID. IRCTC’s terms let it deactivate all of them.
  • Paying early. A payment made while the clash is open doesn’t move the application along.

Can a personal ID be turned into an agent ID?

The IRCTC documents used here don’t describe converting a personal ID into an agent ID. The declaration is about removing the PAN and Aadhaar records so that you can register as an agent.

And there’s one point that surprises people. Registration runs through a Principal Service Provider (PSP). IRCTC does not register a new retail e-ticketing agent directly, and a new retail agent has no direct application route. The PSP registers the agent, and IRCTC issues the agent ID.

What if the release doesn’t work?

IRCTC doesn’t publish a release time or an error guide in the documents cited here, so don’t plan around a duration. If the option is missing, shows an error, or doesn’t accept your password, go through these in order:

  1. Retype the login password and check you’re in the right account.
  2. Check that you’re on IRCTC’s own site and not a copy. Never give a password or OTP to anyone who offers to “release” it for you.
  3. Contact IRCTC. Its contact page lists, as of 17 October 2026, the eQuery portal for ticket and I Mudra wallet queries and 14646 within India. It doesn’t list a PAN-release route, so say plainly that your issue is an account PAN release.
  4. Tell SiOnline support what you see, on +91 91091 35959, 24 hours, 7 days. Don’t give them your password or OTP.

If you can’t log in to the old account at all, you can’t use this route. The documents cited here describe no recovery route, so ask IRCTC.

And please don’t pay for registration while the clash is open. The first instalment is due at signup, and the agent ID is created only after 100% payment. There’s no reason to rush a payment that can’t move forward yet.

Common questions

Can I release only my Aadhaar and keep the PAN? The menu label in SiOnline’s guide names PAN and Aadhaar together, and IRCTC’s declaration speaks of both. No source states that one can be released alone. Ask IRCTC before you act.

Will I lose my IRCTC eWallet balance? IRCTC’s declaration says releasing the PAN deactivates the linked eWallet and the balance will not be refunded. Check the balance first and use it if you can.

Can I use the same mobile number for the agent ID? Only if it’s no longer on the personal account.

Is the release the same as deleting my old account? Not necessarily. The menu says “Suspend User”, and IRCTC hasn’t published what happens to the old ID afterwards. Don’t assume it can be used again.

Then register

Once the clash is cleared, register as an IRCTC agent through SiOnline, and read the full document checklist first.
